Spray Gun Maintenance

Maintenance Do's

The following DO's are a guide to better practice in the care and maintenance of your spray gun and equipment.

check Cover the tops of all drums and containers holding finishing materials to prevent contamination from dust, lint, sawdust, sanding dust etc. Such contaminants can mar your finished product and cause spraygun blockages.
check Wipe the external surfaces of sprayguns at least once a day with a solvent soaked rag to prevent build up of coating materials, if necessary use a bristle cleaning brush and solvent to remove dried build up.
check Use a gun-mounted fitter to prevent any imperfections getting from the paint container to the gun and the product being coated.
check Always use the lowest atomising air pressure and fluid pressure to effectively coat your products at the desired coating speed and film build. Pressures in excess of this will cause material wastage, contaminate your booth area, and clog exhaust filters.
check Use spray gun lube to lubricate needle packing and air valves to prevent them from sticking.

Maintenance Dont's

The following DONT'S are a guide to better practise in the care and maintenance of your spray gun and equipment.

cross Never immerse a spraygun in a container of solvent and leave it to soak, this will cause packing and seals to dry out and become ineffective and will cause paint residue to build up in the air passages reducing the guns atomising ability.
cross Never use wire to clean out blocked air cap holes; this can distort the air passage thus twisting the fan pattern giving an uneven finish.
cross Never take for granted the potential danger that is present with the high fluid pressures involved with airless spray outfits. This high pressure forces the coating material through a tungsten carbide tip thus giving a fairly gentle fan with very little bounce back. HOWEVER, if the tip is removed from the gun the pressure is capable of injecting the fluid through the skin of a person in close range. If removing an airless tip from a gun ALWAYS USE THE TRIGGER LOCK.
